The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Jesse Honri Bullock (ASN: 39075984), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 32d Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces from 22 to 28 May, 1943, at Attu Island, Territory of Alaska. In action against the enemy near the junction of Massacre and Sarana Valleys on 22 May, Sergeant Bullock’s platoon leader was severely wounded. Despite having received a shoulder wound himself, Sergeant Bullock refused to abandon his men and assumed command of the platoon. For seven days he continued to lead his men although his right arm was useless. He never mentioned his wound, and many of his men did not realize he had been hit. During this period Sergeant Bullock’s platoon was constantly in close contact with the enemy. The platoon, though seriously depleted fought on in spite of precipitous mountain terrain and severe rain and snow storms. Sergeant Bullock continued to exercise courageous leadership over his men until 28 May, when he was critically wounded by machine gun fire. His unwavering dedication of himself to his men and to his duty contributed invaluably to the progress of his company’s advance. Staff Sergeant Bullock’s gallant leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
