The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Woodrow Bugg (ASN: 35460617), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 10 April 1945. On that date, when Sergeant Bugg’s platoon was pinned down by intense fire from two enemy machine guns during an assault on Schmira, Germany, he courageously accompanied his platoon leader on a flanking movement to within thirty yards of the camouflaged enemy positions. Firing his rifle from the hip he fearlessly charged through a hail of fire, silenced the first position and although mortally wounded by a concentration of fire from the other enemy machine gun fought on with supreme gallantry until he died. Technical Sergeant Bugg’s intrepid, self-sacrificing actions will live on as a constant inspiration to his comrades.
