Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 55 (March 9, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Albert Lindsey Budd (ASN: 0-1307190), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while Commanding Company G, 2d Battalion, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 November 1944. On that date, Captain Budd commanded an infantry company that spearheaded a battalion attack against the enemy near Petite Hettange, France. While advancing toward the objective he was severely wounded, but he continued on. When the two leading platoons were pinned down by intense machine-gun fire, Captain Budd, completely disregarding his own safety, advanced through the fire and personally led the third platoon in a flanking attack in which many of the enemy were killed and captured and the remainder routed. Only after the objective was taken did Captain Budd consent to evacuation. Captain Budd’s conspicuous heroism, fearless, heroic leadership and loyal devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
