(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Barry Duran Browne (ASN: 0-21099), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the, 420th Field Artillery Battalion, 10th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations, in 1944. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Browne, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Barry Duran Browne (ASN: 0-21099), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 420th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 10th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces from 20 to 24 December 1944. The skillful, heroic leadership Colonel Browne displayed while leading his men against strong enemy forces near Bastogne, Belgium, during the period 20 December to 24 December 1944, distinguishes him as an outstanding commander. He was continually with the front line troops, inspiring and encouraging them by his courageous personal example. On one occasion Colonel Browne personally led five tanks and two squads of infantry in a bold attack on an enemy column, inflicting heavy losses of men and material. On another occasion he directed the fire of his battalion from an exposed position in his half-ton truck, completely disregarding his own safety. Lieutenant Colonel Browne’s conspicuous heroism, inspiring leadership, and loyal devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
