The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Ralph T. Brown (ASN: 0-354104), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 376th Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 March 1945, in Germany. During an attack on Sitzerath, Germany, when Captain Brown observed a well-camouflaged German 77-mm. artillery piece dominating the route of advance and protected from tank artillery fire by rocket launchers, he armed himself with a grenade launcher and courageously crawled towards the German gun. Although he was observed and seriously wounded by almost point-plank fire from the enemy piece, he forced the enemy soldiers manning the rocket launchers to retreat and friendly tanks silenced the artillery piece and led the infantry units in a successful assault upon the town. Captain Brown’s heroic, selfless actions and unswerving devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 94th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
