The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Robert Clifford Briscoe (ASN: 38479027), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 10th Armored Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces near Ulmen, Germany, on 6 March 1945. On that date, when Private Briscoe was leading a reconnaissance patrol consisting of six men and two one-quarter ton trucks into Ulmen, Germany, they were subjected to intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire which wounded a member of the patrol and caused him to fall from the vehicle. With utter disregard for his own safety, Private Briscoe assisted his comrade back into his vehicle and although seriously wounded himself, turned the vehicle around and gallantly continued to drive until the patrol was out of danger. Private Briscoe’s unselfish, courageous actions and unswerving devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
