The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Carmine Anthony Botti (ASN: 33101702), United States Army, for The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Carmine Botti (ASN: 33101702), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Maknassy, Tunisia, on the night of 1 – 2 April 1943. Leading an ammunition detail back to his company area, Private First Class Botti was seriously wounded in the head, chest and legs by an enemy hand grenade, when his group was surprised and attacked by an enemy patrol which had infiltrated through our lines. Despite his wounds, and in the face of continued and observed enemy fire, he evidenced tremendous determination and courage by crawling 150 yards along the road to warn his Commanding Officer of the enemy infiltration. By his devotion to duty and self-sacrificing efforts on behalf of his comrades he enabled his organization to drive out the infiltration and prevent a serious breakthrough. Private First Class Botti’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
