The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Warren Douglas Behrens (ASN: 0-1692633), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 399th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 9 December 1944, near Lemberg, France. Realizing that further advance by his entire platoon would prove extremely costly, Lieutenant Behrens charged forward alone fifty yards up a steep slope devoid of cover in an attempt to destroy hostile machine gun installations. Firing his carbine as he ran, he hurled grenades into two enemy emplacements, wounding two occupants who immediately surrendered. He killed two Germans as they attempted to escape, forced the remainder to withdraw, and subsequently killed three more members of the opposing force who took refuge in nearby buildings. His courageous actions enabled his platoon to take the objective without casualties. First Lieutenant Behrens’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 100th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
