The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Gaetano R. Barcellona (ASN: 0-1017167), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 741st Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on D-Day, 6 June 1944, during the invasion of Normandy, France. Though upon landing, his tank received several hits, Second Lieutenant Barcellona continued it in operation and fearlessly exposed himself to severe enemy rifle, machine gun and artillery fire in order to select enemy targets and direct the fire of his unit. When his ammunition supply became exhausted, Lieutenant Barcellona, completely disregarding his own safety, dismounted from his tank and moved across the fire-swept beach to secure additional ammunition. He then returned through the heavy enemy fire to his tank and continued to carry on the fight. Second Lieutenant Barcellona’s gallant leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
