The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Lewis W. Baldwin (ASN: 6988953), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Battery C, 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 July 1943, five miles northwest of Vittoria, Sicily. Corporal Baldwin voluntarily went forward from his own lines, alone, driving a captured enemy 3-ton tankette, in order to secure information for the defense of the ridge. He was killed while returning to his own lines, under heavy machine gun and artillery fire. Corporal Baldwin’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
