Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 59 (March 17, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James L. Atkins (ASN: 37066376), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 2 October 1944. On that date, Sergeant Atkins led a platoon of infantry against the enemy-held town of Sivry, France, inspiring and encouraging his men by his bold, fearless leadership. Relentlessly pressing the attack he forced his way into the town where for two days and nights he and his men completed their withdrawal, then fought his way back through the town and was later evacuated for wounds suffered in the action. Sergeant Atkins’ conspicuous, heroic leadership and his devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 80th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
