The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Hospital Corpsman Third Class Michael Autrey Teague (NSN: 9193333), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Corpsman with Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with operations against enemy aggressor forces in the Republic of Vietnam, on 2 May 1968. While attacking a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force occupying the village of Dinh To, Quang Tri Province, company G came under intense, accurate sniper fire and sustained numerous casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Petty Officer Teague immediately organized an aid station where he skillfully treated and supervised the evacuation of the wounded. While administering medical aid to a seriously injured comrade, he suddenly came under a heavy volume of enemy hand grenades and automatic weapons fire. Undaunted by the hostile fire impacting around him, Petty Officer Teague steadfastly remained in the hazardous area and continued rendering medical assistance, simultaneously shielding the wounded man with his own body. Despite being seriously wounded himself, he commenced to move the casualty over the fire-swept terrain to a covered position, continuing his determined efforts until he was mortally wounded. Petty Officer Teague’s heroic actions, sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades, and selfless devotion to duty were an inspiration to all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
