The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Hospitalman Stanley Wayne Scheppman (NSN: 1389102), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Corpsman with the Third Platoon, Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces on 13 March 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. When his platoon came under intense enemy fire while attacking well entrenched enemy positions during Operation Tippecanoe near Thanh Hoa (1), Hospitalman Scheppman responded with inspiring heroism in assisting the seriously wounded. With complete disregard for his own safety, he ran a distance of 100 meters under extremely heavy enemy fire to administer first aid to a wounded Marine. While providing aid to the casualty, Hospitalman Scheppman received a head wound which resulted in the loss of his eye. Reacting immediately, another platoon corpsman came to his aid, however, Hospitalman Scheppman refused treatment and directed his fellow corpsman to give all possible aid to the wounded Marines while he treated his own wounds. His courageous and prompt actions were an inspiration to all who observed him. By his exceptional professional skill, uncommon concern for others, steadfast courage and selfless devotion to duty, Hospital Corpsman Scheppman upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
