The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Hospitalman Roger D. Scearse (NSN: 2904549), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 11 June 1966, while serving as a Corpsman with Company F, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. When his platoon detonated an anti-personnel mine which killed one Marine and wounded seven others, including himself, Hospitalman Scearse, although sustaining severe shrapnel wounds in both arms and legs and a fracture of the left leg, courageously crawled to each of the wounded men to administer medical aid. When fragments from a second explosion sprayed his body, he realized the platoon was in the middle of a mine field and shouted instructions to clear the area in order to minimize further detonations. Continuing his ministrations under extreme personal hardship, he supervised the evacuation of twenty wounded Marines before accepting evacuation and treatment for himself. By his exceptional courage and inspiring devotion to duty, Hospitalman Scearse upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
