Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 488 (January 6, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Lynn W. Folliott (ASN: US-56717709), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force while serving with Company D, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 196th Infantry Brigade, on 17 November 1968, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Specialist Fourth Class Folliott and his company were on a search and clear mission in the Que Son Valley. Specialist Folliott’s platoon was on point when they came under heavy North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong fire and was cut off from the rest of their unit. Realizing their situation Specialist Folliott with complete disregard for his own personal safety, exposed himself to the insurgent fire from the enemy reinforced positions and made his way to the edge of the woodline. He then proceeded to crawl toward enemy machinegun positions while his men provided suppressive fire. Specialist Folliott when in position and with the use of hand grenades disposed of the first of three enemy machinegun strongholds. When realizing they had lost fire superiority, the enemy began their retreat. Specialist Folliott made his way back to the protected perimeter and assisted with the wounded. The resolution of purpose, dynamic leadership and bold initiative displayed by Specialist Folliott saved many lives and resulted in the rout of the enemy from the area. Specialist Fourth Class Folliott’s unquestionable valor in close combat against a numerically superior hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
