The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Hospital Corpsman Second Class Richard A. Peterson (NSN: 9188078), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 21 May 1967 while serving as a Corpsman with Company H, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Displaying exceptional professional skill and courage when a Marine sustained a serious head injury, Petty Officer Peterson unhesitatingly rushed forward to administer medical aid to the wounded man although the remainder of the patrol was temporarily halted by the intense fire. As he began to render assistance, artillery support was brought in extremely close to his position and he fearlessly shielded the wounded man with his own body to prevent further injury. On 25 May 1967, he again exhibited outstanding professionalism on a search and clear operation when a Marine detonated a booby trap and was mortally wounded. Heavy small arms and automatic-weapons fire began almost immediately after the explosion. However, Petty Officer Peterson courageously ran to assist the casualty and steadfastly remained at his side until the Marine succumbed. His unwavering determination and concern for the welfare of his comrades in the face of extreme danger were an inspiration to all those who observed him. By his bold initiative, uncommon courage and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Petty Officer Peterson upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
