The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Hospitalman Third Class Martin James Hamlett (NSN: 6972148), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against a hostile force while serving as a Corpsman attached to Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 28 February 1967, Hospital Corpsman Hamlett’s platoon was conducting a search and clear mission during Operation DESOTO when the unit came under intense automatic weapons fire while crossing a clearing. Almost immediately, one Marine was killed and several others were wounded, including the platoon commander and platoon sergeant. Unhesitatingly, Hospital Corpsman Hamlett ran 100 meters through concentrated enemy fire to provide medical attention to the point man who had been seriously wounded in both legs and was lying exposed to the Viet Cong fire. Exhibiting exceptional professional skill and bold initiative, Hospital Corpsman Hamlett fearlessly placed himself between the casualty and the Viet Cong while skillfully administering first aid to the Marine. Undaunted by his perilous position and despite two painful wounds which he received while assisting his comrade, he continued to treat the casualty until he was wounded a third time and knocked to the ground when an enemy round struck him in the neck. His steadfast determination and heroic actions in the face of grave personal risk inspired all who observed him. By his exceptional professional skill, bold initiative, courage and selfless devotion to duty, Hospital Corpsman Hamlett upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
