The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Hospitalman Third Class William Russell Gray (NSN: 1383786), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against a hostile force while serving as a Corpsman attached to Company I, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 28 January 1969, Company I was conducting a search and destroy operation twenty-four miles southwest of Quang Tri City when the Marines came under intense fire from a well-concealed hostile force employing grenades, small arms, and automatic weapons. Realizing that his unit had sustained several casualties, Petty Officer Gray unhesitatingly maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain, from one injured man to another, rendering medical aid. With complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly rushed down a hillside, undaunted by the enemy fire directed at him, and began treating two wounded Marines. While steadfastly engaged in this selfless task, Petty Officer Gray was mortally wounded by hostile fire. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Petty Officer Gray upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
