The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Asbury Hilliard Sallenger, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane in Composite Squadron ONE (VC-1), attached to the U.S.S. CARD (CVE-11), during an attack on an enemy submarine near the Flores Islands in the North Atlantic, on 8 August 1943. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Sallenger, sighted a submarine on the surface. As the plane swooped down, several shells from the submarine destroyed the plane’s radio, as well as the electric and hydraulic systems. Damage to the plane prevented the release of bombs, but Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Sallenger skillfully maneuvered his plane and made a second attack, manually releasing the bombs, which damaged the submarine. When his plane was forced to land on the water and began sinking, he entered the flooded tunnel compartment in a vain attempt to rescue the already dead or seriously wounded radioman. He and his surviving turret gunner then managed to release a life raft from which they were subsequently picked up by a destroyer. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
