The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Harry Fanker Miller, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. JENKINS (DD-447) in the Solomon Islands, June to July 1943. Commander Miller destroyed at least two enemy planes and assisted in the disruption of several air attacks during the assault on Rendova. Later, he further distinguished himself in the vigorous bombardment of Vangunu Island. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Harry Fanker Miller, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. JENKINS (DD-447), during operations in Kula Gulf, Solomon Islands, on 5 and 6 July 1943. Commanding his warship during landing operations on New Georgia island and participating in an engagement with numerically superior hostile naval forces, Commander Miller directed accurate gun and torpedo fire which destroyed or severely damaged a large hostile vessel. Commander Miller’s inspiring leadership and the valiant devotion to duty of his command contributed in large measure to the outstanding success of these vital missions and reflect great credit upon the United States Naval Service.
