The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Ensign John Gerald Donnell, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while in charge of a Scout Boat from the U.S.S. THOMAS JEFFERSON during the assault on and occupation of French Morocco from November 8 to 11, 1942. Preceding the advance landings at Anzio in January 1944. Ensign Donnell operated in dangerous waters and under continual enemy fire. Experienced in three previous amphibious landings, he accurately directed the initial boat waves to their assigned landing points.
