The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Thomas Garrow Wallace (NSN: 0-81896), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession while serving as First Lieutenant and Damage Control Officer of the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. INTREPID (CV-11), during operations in Philippine waters when his ship was attacked by a heavy force of Japanese aircraft on 25 November 1944. Engaged in fire fighting, Lieutenant Commander Wallace was stunned and burned by a bomb explosion which killed men nearby. Heroically and with utter disregard for personal safety amidst smoke, flame, and exploding ammunition, he continued to fight the fire until it was extinguished. His leadership and fearlessness were an inspiration to the men around him. His efforts were undoubtedly instrumental in saving the ship from more serious damage and to him should go the major credit for getting the fires under control. His courage and devotion to duty were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
