    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant James Everett Vose, Jr. (NSN: 0-73523), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in action against enemy Japanese forces the Battle of Midway, on 6 June 1942. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, he took part in persistent bombing and strafing attacks against fleeing enemy forces in the face of tremendous anti-aircraft fire. By his stern perseverance and resolute devotion to the accomplishment of a vastly important objective, he contributed greatly to the destruction of the enemy and to the victory achieved by our forces. His conduct on this occasion was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant James Everett Vose, Jr. (NSN: 0-73523), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Scouting Plane and Commanding Officer of Scouting Squadron NINE (VS-9), attached to the U.S.S. HORNET (CV-8), in the successful aerial action against Japanese naval forces on 26 October 1942, near Santa Cruz Islands. Lieutenant Vose led his squadron through heavy fighter opposition and severe anti-aircraft fire to press home the attack against the enemy. He personally scored a direct bomb hit on a large Japanese carrier. His outstanding leadership, skill and courage contributed in a large measure to the extremely heavy damage inflicted on the enemy. His actions throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
