The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Lloyd Wilber Van Antwerp (NSN: 0-77725), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Target Coordinator for the strike group and Division leader of an eight-plane carrier based torpedo aircraft division of Torpedo Squadron EIGHTEEN (VT-18), attached to the U.S.S. INTREPID (CV-11), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Philippine Islands during the Battle for Leyte Gulf on 24 October 1944. In the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire from major elements of an enemy Fleet, Lieutenant Commander Van Antwerp directed with no regard for personal safety, a well coordinated dive bomber-torpedo attack, and obtained one of three direct torpedo hits on a large enemy battleship. His coolness, courage and skill were all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
