The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Gunner’s Mate Second Class Charles Wymond Taylor (NSN: 0-4380812), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving as Mount Captain of anti-aircraft on board the Light Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. CABOT (CVL-28), in action against the enemy on 25 November 1944, during violent attack by Japanese aircraft off the coast of the Philippine Islands. Gunner’s Mate Second Class Taylor set an outstanding example of bravery and leadership when having sustained serious and painful internal injuries as a result of a nearby explosion, he faithfully remained at his post and un-interruptingly continued firing against another enemy aircraft, succeeding in inflicting sufficient damage on the enemy aircraft as to deflect it from a direct hit upon this vessel. He allowed himself to be removed for treatment only after all danger of a further attack had passed. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States.
