The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Boatswain’s Mate Jack E. Wright, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a spotter for the Captain of the No. 1 gun on board the Destroyer U.S.S. ROPER (DD-147), when his ship made a successful attack upon the German submarine U-85 in the waters of the Atlantic on the night of 13 – 14 April 1942. Chief Boatswain’s Mate Wright’s command of a machine gun firing promptly and accurately prevented the enemy submarine crew from manning their deck gun, thereby aiding materially in the complete destruction of the German U-Boat without loss or damage to the United States Destroyer or its personnel. Chief Boatswain’s Mate Wright’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
