The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman Second Class John J. Waller, United States Navy, for gallant and intrepid conduct as a member of the Armed Guard aboard the U.S.A.T. MERIMACK, on the occasion of the torpedoing of that vessel by an enemy submarine in the Caribbean waters, on 9 June 1942. Immediately following the explosion, Gunner’s Mate Third Class Howard D. Skaling and Seaman First Class John J. Waller promptly manned their gun and despite the hazard of further torpedo attacks remained at their battle stations until the forward part of the ship was awash and the order “Abandon ship” was given. Because of their loyal and determined fighting spirit, they were of the last to leave the ship. Seaman Second Class Waller’s gallant actions, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
