The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Junior Grade Kenneth MacLean Tebo (NSN: 0-100420), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action and meritorious devotion to duty while serving as Officer-of-the-Deck on board the Destroyer U.S.S. ROPER (DD-147), when his ship made a successful attack upon the German submarine U-85 in the waters of the Atlantic on the night of 13 – 14 April 1942. His accurate conning of the ship until contact was made undoubtedly prevented loss or damage to the U.S.S. ROPER and its personnel and aided materially in the complete destruction of the enemy submarine. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
