The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Arthur Howard Taylor (NSN: 0-61557), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. HADDOCK (SS-231), during the FIRST War Patrol of that vessel in enemy controlled waters of the East China Sea during the period 28 July 1942 to 19 September 1942. Lieutenant Commander Taylor pressed home all attacks in such a skillful and resolute manner that three large enemy merchant ships totaling 24,301 tons were sunk. In spite of enemy counter efforts he brought his ship through without damage and his crew home without loss or injury. His courage and skill were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Commander in Chief Pacific: Serial 0762 (April 5, 1943)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Arthur Howard Taylor (NSN: 0-61557), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in combat while serving as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. HADDOCK (SS-231), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the THIRD War Patrol of that submarine from 28 December 1942 to 17 February 1943. Despite persistent and extremely harassing hostile opposition, Lieutenant Commander Taylor, displaying excellent judgment and skillful seamanship in his ability to take ingenious advantage of every attack opportunity, distinguished himself by his participation in the sinking of a significant amount of Japanese shipping. Through his expert maneuvering he achieved this outstanding success without disabling damage to his own ship. His valiant leadership and steadfast devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 316 (July 1943)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Arthur Howard Taylor (NSN: 0-61557), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. HADDOCK (SS-231), during the SECOND War Patrol of that vessel in enemy controlled waters of the East China Sea during the period 11 October 1942 to 149 December 1942. Despite strong enemy countermeasures and unfavorable sea conditions, Lieutenant Commander Taylor took advantage of every opportunity to strike the enemy and in a series of skillfully conducted attacks succeeded in sinking 24,052 tons of enemy Japanese shipping and severely damaging an additional 27,500 tons. He brought his ship through without casualty to personnel of his own command. Lieutenant Commander Taylor’s conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men, and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Naval Service.
