The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Rear Admiral Thomas Lamison Sprague (NSN: 0-17057/1310), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commander Task Group SEVENTY-SEVEN POINT FOUR (TG-77.4), with his Flag in the U.S.S. SANGAMON (ACV-26), in action against a major Task Force of the Japanese Fleet during the Battle off Samar, on 25 October 1944. When, shortly after daybreak, one of his three groups of escort carriers was attacked by the Japanese Central Force composed of four battleships, five cruisers, and eleven destroyers which had steamed unobserved through San Bernardino Strait during the night, Rear Admiral Sprague gallantly met the challenge of the enemy’s superior fire power and gave battle with every resource at his command. While the unit under direct attack fought a running surface engagement with the ships of the Japanese Central Force, he launched all-out assaults with his air groups. Despite hostile close-range bombardment, torpedo attacks and suicide dive-bombing attacks on lightly armed carriers, the units under Rear Admiral Sprague’s command succeeded in halting the enemy onslaught after two and one half hours of furious fighting. By his forceful leadership, courage and skill in turning potential defeat into a brilliant victory, Rear Admiral Sprague sustained and enhanced the finest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
