The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade James McBride Shumway (NSN: 0-264345), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Dive Bomber of Bombing Squadron EIGHTEEN (VB-18), attached to the U.S.S. INTREPID (CV-11), during the first strike against the Japanese in the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea, on 26 October 1944. Volunteering for his third successive day’s mission against the enemy Fleet, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Shumway launched his attack against the battleship in the face of anti-aircraft fire from enemy warships and adverse weather conditions. The action was a contributory factor in the destruction of an enemy Task Force and removed a serious threat to our ground forces in the Philippine Islands. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Shumway’s skill, courage and determination were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
