The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] Maurice William Shea (NSN: 0-78685), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. RATON (SS-270), on the SIXTH War Patrol of that submarine during the period 6 October 1944 to 1 December 1944, in enemy controlled waters of the South China Sea. Skillfully maneuvering his ship into a favorable position to strike at enemy shipping, Commander Shea successfully penetrated strong enemy air and surface escort screens to launch torpedo attacks, sinking more than 57,000 tons of enemy shipping and inflicting damage on vessels totaling more than 20,000 tons. Courageously and expertly directing his vessel, he evaded severe enemy countermeasures and brought her safe to port. Commander Shea’s leadership and devotion the fulfillment of each hazardous mission reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
