Ulysses Simpson Grant Sharp was related to Civil War General and former President Ulysses S. Grant by marriage; Grant was the husband of Sharp’s father’s aunt. He was a graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1927. His older brother, Commander Thomas Sharp, earned the Silver Star and was Missing in Action in the Pacific when his submarine, U.S.S. Pickerel, was sunk. Sharp retired as a U.S. Navy Admiral.

BOYD (DD-544), during operations against enemy Japanese forces, on 13 and 17 October 1944. Skilled and courageous in directing his command in its assigned duties as a screening vessel protecting the withdrawal of two battle-damaged ships from enemy-infested waters, Captain Sharp contributed essentially to the expeditious accomplishment of this hazardous salvage mission. By his outstanding seamanship, he enabled the BOYD to perform dangerous rescues, including the transfer of personnel under unusually adverse conditions of wind and sea and hostile aerial attacks. His inspiring leadership, cool courage and zealous devotion to the completion of these assignments reflect the highest credit upon Captain Sharp and the United States Naval Service.

As Commander Destroyer Squadron FIVE, Captain Sharp discharged his many responsibilities in an outstanding manner and with diligence and ability, participating in all phases of operations as a unit commander with the Fast Carrier Task Force and in bombardment missions. By his judgment, personal skill, and conscientious devotion to duty he contributed materially to the overall success of the operations. His outstanding performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain [then Commander] Ulysses Simpson Grant Sharp (NSN: 0-61258), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. BOYD (DD-544), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Nauru Island, on 8 December 1943. When his ship was hit and severely damaged while carrying out the hazardous task of searching for a friendly pilot during a bombardment of hostile shore positions, Captain Sharp skillfully extricated his vessel from its dangerous situation without further damage and, by efficient ship handling and the effective damage control measures taken enabled the ship to continue in the action and return to port under her own power. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

His sound judgment, statesmanship, dedication, and tenacity, combined with an extraordinary ability to command and deploy a force of almost one million men, resulted in unremitting pressure and a determined stand against the spread of communism in Asia and the Pacific. Admiral Sharp’s inspiring leadership and strategic direction were continually exemplified in the impartial and skillful employment of his combined forces of all military services and have earned him the respect and admiration of his Service and of his component commanders. He demonstrated exceptional military skill and bold imagination in the conduct of the air war against enemy forces in North Vietnam. His understanding in the use of all forms of military and economic power were particularly brilliant and contributed, materially to our objectives. Admiral Sharp served with distinction as the United States Military Advisor in all international alliances in the Pacific Command area. His diplomacy, unwavering fairness, and consummate professional skill generated warm admiration in all with whom he dealt. Senior foreign statesmen and allied military leaders exchanged views with Admiral Sharp in a climate of mutual friendship and complete confidence, thereby enhancing the objectives of mutual security throughout the western Pacific and Asia. As the principal advisor to the Chief of naval Operations on matters under consideration by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and as the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations on international politics–military affairs, he served with unique distinction, participating directly in the formulation of strategic concepts and plans for the defense of the United States, and in establishment of security policies designed to strengthen and preserve peace throughout the world. Through his vision and side knowledge of the role of naval forces as a component of total national strength, he engendered the admiration and respect of all with whom he served. His comprehensive grasp and understanding of military power enhanced his brilliant contribution in support of national objectives, as typified during the Cuban crisis in October 1962.
