The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Chief Cabin Steward Carl Scheufele (NSN: 3750931), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving on board the Destroyer U.S.S. HENLEY (DD-391), in rendering assistance to many of his shipmates when the ship on which he was serving was in a sinking condition. When his ship was torpedoed and sunk on 3 October 1942, Chief Cabin Steward Scheufele gave his life jacket to an injured man and helped him over the side. In utter disregard for his own safety, he proceeded to cast off life rafts and to find life jackets for other wounded shipmates. He was last seen attempting to abandon ship, when his vessel was awash and rapidly submerging. His heroism and devotion to duty and to his shipmates, even to death, were an inspiration to all who observed him, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
