The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Albert Amiel Schaal, Jr., United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Dive Bomber in Bombing Squadron TEN (VF-10), attached to the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE (CV-6), during the attack on the Japanese Fleet west of the Mariana Islands, in the First Battle of the Philippine Sea, on 20 June 1944. By skillfully maneuvering his plane, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Schaal evaded intercepting fighters and attacked successfully an enemy aircraft carrier, placing his bomb directly upon his objective. By his airmanship and cool courage in the face of tremendous odds, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Schaal contributed materially to the infliction of extensive and costly damage on the Japanese Fleet in this decisive engagement and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
