The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Chief Cook Diosdado Gregorio Rome (NSN: 4985035), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action against the enemy while serving aboard the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. NEW ORLEANS (CA-32), in action against the Japanese after the torpedoing of his ship in enemy-controlled waters during the Battle of Tassafaronga on the night of 30 November 1942. Chief Cook Rome stood by his battle station in the performance of his duties despite the fact that his compartment was flooded and filled with gas as a result of an explosion which damaged his ship. Although he finally made his way out of the dangerous area and carried on throughout the remainder of the night and part of the next day, he eventually collapsed from the deadly effects of prolonged exposure to the gas. Chief Cook Rome’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
