John Price graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1916. from 1949 to 1950, he served as the 5th Vice Chief of Naval Operations. He retired as a U.S. Navy Admiral.

Rear Admiral Price brilliantly conceived, planned, and successfully executed four strikes, utilizing Coronado patrol bombers against enemy installations on Wake Island in support of major operations in the Central Pacific.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Rear Admiral John Dale Price, United States Navy, was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commandant of the Naval Operating Base, Okinawa, in July 1945, in directing the development of that captured island as an advanced naval operating base.

An outstanding leader and administrator, he capably directed the operations of Navy patrol aircraft in the Central Pacific and, with keen foresight and a complete understanding of the essential involved, effected all preparations for the logistic support of these forces.     The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Rear Admiral John Dale Price, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession while serving as Commander of Air Wing ONE (AW-1), in action against the enemy from April through July 1945, while deployed at Okinawa in the Ryukyu Islands. Rear Admiral Price planned and directed the flights of his command over extensive enemy-controlled sea lands and vital enemy-held areas dangerously close to the Japanese Homeland. Forceful and aggressive, he was in large measure responsible for the success of these strike groups in sinking 159 hostile ships and in damaging 29 enemy aircraft. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States.
