The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander George Egbert Porter, Jr. (NSN: 0-71553), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. SENNET (SS-408) during a War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-controlled waters in 1945. Despite adverse conditions he took his submarine close into enemy-held positions to launch well-planned and smartly executed torpedo attacks which resulted in sinking enemy shipping totaling approximately 9,000 tons. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
