The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Eugene Edward Paro (NSN: 0-59590), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while attached to the Submarine Detachment, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Fort Mills, Corregidor, Philippine Islands, during the period 1 January to 10 April 1942. Though subjected to almost continuous enemy aerial attack, Commander Paro risked his life on numerous occasions to carry out vital missions during the prolonged siege of Corregidor and the subsequent evacuation of personnel from that hazardous area. Cool and remarkably resourceful in spite of constant danger, and working under great difficulties caused by lack of equipment, he contributed immeasurably to the uninterrupted operations of various units and to the heroic defense of Corregidor. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
