The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Fire Controlman Third Class Robert Crosby Nunes, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving aboard a United States Navy warship, during action against enemy Japanese naval forces off Savo Island, on the night of 30 November 1942. Fire Controlman Nunes remained in the vicinity of his battle station after it had become enveloped in flames and assisted in rescuing his injured comrades. Although he himself was suffering from burns and his hair was on fire, he helped to extricate a badly injured officer and then assisted in removing another seriously burned and helpless man to a place of safety. Fire Controlman Third Class Nunes’ gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
