Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 311 (February 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Gunner’s Mate Albert S. Noland, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-2), in action during the Battle of Midway, on 6 June 1942. When all but one man on his gun crew had been either killed or injured, Chief Gunner’s Mate Noland, despite the fact that he himself was painfully wounded in the right arm and both legs by bomb splinters, courageously stepped into the place of the dead loader and helped maintain the firing of the guns of his mount throughout the remainder of the attack. Chief Gunner’s Mate Noland’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty at the risk of his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
