The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade, John A. McWaid, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity aboard the U.S.S. NORTHAMPTON (CA-26), during action against enemy Japanese naval forces off Savo Island, on the night of 30 November 1942. After his ship was badly damaged by a torpedo explosion, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, McWaid, ordered to abandon his battle station, organized and led a fire-fighting party to the searchlight platform directly above the boat deck fire. Although exploding ammunition showered his position with shell fragments and burning powder, he continued to direct a hose against the spreading flames until the ship’s water supply failed. His heroic conduct, maintained at great risk in the face of grave danger, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
