Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 312 (March 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Ensign Hunter Marshall, III (NSN: 0-103623), United States Naval Reserve, for gallant and intrepid conduct as Commander of the Armed Guard aboard the U.S.A.T. MERIMACK, on the occasion of the torpedoing of that vessel by an enemy submarine in the Caribbean waters, on 9 June 1942. Ensign Marshall’s crew promptly manned their guns and, despite the hazards of further imminent torpedo attacks, remained at their battle stations until the forward part of the ship was awash and the order “Abandon Ship” was given, at which time Ensign Marshall was one of the last to leave the sinking ship. Ensign Marshall’s gallant leadership and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
