The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class William Porter Liddle, Jr., United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Medical Corpsman with the FIRST Marine Division, in action against Japanese forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 18 August 1942. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Liddle continuously exposed himself to enemy machine-gun and rifle fire in order to administer to his wounded comrades during vigorous attacks by our force on the Japanese-held village of Matanikau, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
