The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander George William Lautrup, Jr. (NSN: 0-73465), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer and Navigator of the U.S.S. GRAYLING (SS-209), in action against the enemy Japanese on the FIRST War Patrol of that submarine during the period from 7 December 1942 to 14 March 1943. Efficiently operating the torpedo data computer and skillfully piloting the GRAYLING through restricted enemy-controlled waters, Lieutenant Commander Lautrup rendered inestimable assistance in sinking four freighters, one submarine tender, one tanker and three small craft. On another occasion during severe depth-charging of his ship, Lieutenant Commander Lautrup personally supervised damage control operations and not only maintained the high morale of his crew through his inspiring courage, but also contributed immeasurably to keeping the GRAYLING in complete readiness for action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
