The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Commander Carroll Burgess Jones, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving with Patrol Squadron FORTY-THREE (VP-43) during World War II. Leading his squadron over the Aleutian Islands, without benefit of fighter escort, he directed perilous, low-altitude bombing attacks on enemy ships in Kiska harbor. At less than 1,000 feet, he released his bombs, probably sinking two hostile vessels and destroying two planes despite fierce machine gun opposition from six hostile fighters.

Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 313 (April 1943)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Carroll Burgess Jones, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Commander of a Navy Patrol Plane and Commanding Officer of Patrol Squadron FORTY-THREE (VP-43), Patrol Wing FOUR, in the Aleutian Islands, Territory of Alaska, during the period 10 through 20 June 1942. Flying under extremely adverse weather conditions and facing heavy, concentrated anti-aircraft fire from enemy ship and shore batteries, Lieutenant Commander Jones led his squadron in repeated bombing and strafing attacks on Japanese ships in Kiska Harbor. With his own plane pierced by shrapnel and lighter caliber projectiles from enemy fire, he was forced to fly blind on pull-outs, avoiding the perilous cloud-obscured mountains surrounding the bay at Kiska. His courageous determination and superb airmanship displayed in these daring attacks were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
