The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] Joseph Bryan Icenhower (NSN: 0-77081), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Diving Officer of the U.S.S. STURGEON (SS-187), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the SECOND War Patrol of that submarine from 29 December 1941 to 13 February 1942. Demonstrating outstanding skill in control of depth, Commander Icenhower rendered valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in evading enemy countermeasures and in conducting successful attacks which resulted in the sinking of three Japanese ships. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Joseph Bryan Icenhower (NSN: 0-77081), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. JALLO (SS-368), on the FIRST War Patrol of that submarine during the period 9 October 1944 to 10 December 1944, in enemy controlled waters of the Luzon Strait in the Philippine Islands. An aggressive leader, Commander Icenhower launched repeated strikes against enemy shipping and, by his expert ship-handling contributed materially to the success of the JALLO in sinking a hostile warship and in evading severe hostile countermeasures. Through his experience and sound judgment Commander Icenhower brought his ship safely back to port. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
