The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) (Posthumously) to Sergeant Nicholas A. Sprovtsoff, United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action on 5 July 2007, while serving as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the United States Marine Corps Embedded Training Team 5-1, 2d Kandak, 201st Corps with 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Sergeant Sprovtsoff, with complete disregard for his own safety and in spite of wounds sustained in combat, effectively orchestrated his unit’s defense over the course of a 48-hour firefight. His unwavering courage, selfless service, and situational awareness under fire were decisive in his unit’s defeat of the enemy ambush. Sergeant Sprovtsoff’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his command, and the United States Armed Forces.
