The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Corporal Robert J. Warner, United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in action against enemy forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, from 15 September to 20 October 1944. Corporal Warner, a leader of a demolition team, showed exceptional courage, ability, and leadership while performing demolition missions over the precipitous terrain north of the airfield, carrying heavy loads of explosives under very adverse weather conditions. On 20 September, while under extremely heavy mortar and small arms fire, he led his team over a precarious route to several caves where the enemy was emplaced. He participated in and directed the destruction of these positions and, upon the successful completion of his mission, led his team to the safety of friendly cover. Upon reaching friendly lines, although himself wounded, he administered aid to those men who also were wounded. Throughout the long and difficult campaign he performed his duties in an outstanding and most commendable manner, and proved to be a great inspiration to the men under his command. His courage, skill, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
