The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Major Robert W. Ferguson, United States Marine Corps, for meritorious achievement in operations against the enemy while serving as Operations Officer, 7th Motor Transportation Battalion, General Support Group-2, 1st Force Service Support Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Saudi Arabia from 2 September 1990 to 15 March 1991. During this period, Major Ferguson consistently displayed superior technical skills, resourcefulness and superb managerial abilities. As a direct result of his efforts, his unit delivered over 115,000 tons of ammunition and supplies and over 22 million gallons of fuel and water to I Marine Expeditionary Force units. When logistical sustainment contingencies called for the battalion to augment host nation commercial assets that were operated by various units from the Selected Marine Corps Reserve, Major Ferguson immediately initiated procedures to train and coordinate these critical companies for operations. Working around the clock and during Iraqi missile attacks, Major Ferguson remained vigilant and continued to respond to operational transportation missions. Major Ferguson developed and supervised a tactical surge ammunition and vehicle recovery operation along the main service road, recovering critical ammunition and equipment for further use in the war. Major Ferguson’s initiative and courageous action were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
